Hong Kong Schools Told To Remove Books That Violate New Security Law

Hong Kong’s Education Bureau on Monday ordered schools to review all reading materials in the curriculum and remove books that could violate Beijing’s sweeping new national security law, which dramatically broadens the powers of local and mainland authorities to investigate, prosecute and punish dissenters.

The move comes on the same day police were given expansive new investigative and surveillance power’s over the territory and its citizens.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the Chinese Communist Party’s handling of Hong Kong “Orwellian,” saying the party’s “destruction of free Hong Kong continues.
